“How do I become Catholic?”
That’s the question seekers often ask us. Too often, we fail to go deep enough to find out what they are really asking. We are sometimes too quick to say something like, “To become Catholic, you have to come to these 36 classes that start in September and finish by Easter.” Because it is our vocation to “teach,” we feel obligated to teach doctrine as our first task. But Pope Francis is telling us that is not our first task.
Pope Francis said:
On the lips of the catechist the first proclamation must ring out over and over: “Jesus Christ loves you; he gave his life to save you; and now he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen and free you.” (Evangelii gaudium, 164)
When we teach this, when we focus on just this and nothing else, our teaching heals wounds. Every wound is healed by the good news that Jesus loves us. So what exactly is the kerygma and how do we teach it? And is that really all we are supposed to teach?
Those are the questions Nick Wagner is going to discuss in this online course. Discover the true power of your teaching vocation—the power to heal the wounds of our seekers.
