Do we always have to use the Year A readings for the RCIA scrutinies? Diana Macalintal and Nick Wagner uncover an answer from the seventh century.
Thanks so much for this informative podcast! We’ve been using the A readings for quite a while, but I must admit that Diana’s explanation on the progressive nature of the readings was extremely helpful. It made so much sense to me. Thank you! I do have one somewhat unrelated question. If there are uncatechized baptized candidates in the catechumenate, is it permissible to celebrate the optional Penitential rite with them on the second Sunday of Lent, or is that rite to be used only when there are no elect in the parish?
Hi Peggy. Thanks so much for your comments. I’m so glad the podcast was helpful.
Regarding the uncatechized baptized candidates, you may use the optional penitential rite with them even if you have elect. Some teams have done so, and they tell me it is very helpful for the candidates. That hasn’t been my direct experience though. I find it much more beneficial to take the baptized candidates to the parish reconciliation service during Lent. That way, they are catechized about the normative way of celebrating reconciliation in the parish. And also, the lenten Sundays are then more directly focused on the elect, which I think is important.
Thanks for all your hard work and commitment to initiation ministry.
