  1. The key to discernment in the catechumenate is that it’s an ongoing process. The sponsor who accompanies the catechumen is both a witness and guide. As a witness the sponsor reports back to the team the growth and struggles of the catechumen. This must be an ongoing process, done at least three times a year in a formal confidential setting and more frequently with specific issues. The team then prayerfully considers what the sponsors have reported and gives guidance back to the sponsors who in turn guide the catechumens. Readiness for election is known and no surprise. Often the catechumen will state their lack of readiness.
