Is your RCIA open all year-round? Let the liturgical seasons be your guide, part 2

  1. Good morning Team RCIA and thank you for your continued help with the RCIA process. I enjoyed your presentations at the LA Religious Ed Congress!

I am wondering if you can give any advice on the “Year Round” process–I have a high school inquirer who I have met with for close to a year and is ready to continue with the Rite of Acceptance. We have met many times and have learned much about the Mass, as this was her interest. Doing so led us through the Bible and Salvation History, and continued with Jesus and His teachings, prayer, and God’s love and mercy. She has attended a Catholic High school for 3 years now, and has learned much about sacraments and scripture. I anticipate her receiving the sacraments of initiation before the usual time of the Easter Vigil. Possibly December or January. My question is, how do we then celebrate the other Rites and presentations? When should we proceed through Purification and Enlightenment and the Scrutinies? Any suggestions? ThIs there a resource out there that would help me with this? Tanks much Nick and Diana!

  2. Hello Nick, Diana and Everyone,
Having done or promoted the RCIA process for the last 30 some years, the benefits are nothing but positive. Not only does the community become involved but the Candidates and Catechumens also catechize the community. Some examples of this: the Candidates and Catechumens begin to wear the liturgical colors at the proper time, now we see it spreading throughout the community – fun watching it happen, the Candidates and Catechumens are prepared when receiving Communion to acknowledge the blood of Christ if they are not going to receive it by at least making a slight bow of the head as they pass by, again it’s fun to watch the community to begin to do this as well. Another example, having the Candidates and Catechumens slightly bow their heads as the Book of the Gospels pass by them, now the whole community is doing it whenever we have a Gospel procession. Just a few little examples of how we catechize each other. A little proud of the fact that RCIA has indirectly catechized the community as well. Praise the process!!
