  1. I read the paragraph about RCIA 141 “For the scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ.”

    and it makes me wonder:
Sounds like God’s grace, like a sacrament, so why not get them right to Baptism?

  2. Hi Alan. The scrutinies are direct preparation for baptism, which is normally celebrated at the Easter Vigil. See RCIA 126.

Thank you for the material of the history of the scrutinies. I was a missionary in South Africa and started the RCIA in the Johannesburg Archdiocese. I also taught the RCIA at St. Augustine College there, but I left all my books and notes there and I wanted refresh my thinking.

    Thanks for your good work.

  4. Thanks. I teach about the Scrutinies in this weeks RCIA session. I’ll use excerpts from the post
