Rite of Acceptance in Easter?

  1. I am on the RCIA team at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Davison, Michigan. We are celebrating the Rite of Acceptance on April 26. We always continue dismissal during the summer months but no evening sessions. This year we are talking about extending the dismissal by 30 minutes to take place of having an evening session. Our director also continues inquiry during the summer months for those who call during this time and then we have another Rite of Acceptance in the fall.

  2. Hi Debra. Sounds terrific. Is the extra 30 minutes going to be a continuation of breaking open the word or will it be a more formal catechesis?

  3. Bravo, Debra and the folks at St. John the Evangelist!

Incidentally, suggestion #2 is my favorite. Empower the sponsors. In fact, if you invite newcomers to a scripture group or other parish event, sponsors are the best people to go with them, introduce them, converse with them about their impressions, etc.

To take the sponsor idea even further… Summer is a great time for “field trips” for catechumen-sponsor pairs. Visit a retreat house or monastery or outdoor shrine. Take a tour of the cathedral (many have self-guided tours). Browse in a Catholic religious articles store or bookstore. These outings are great discussion-starters, but they also enable the catechumens to find their way around in environments that may be unfamiliar to them.
