Description:
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults requires several steps of discernment, as those contemplating a major step attempt to discover what direction to take. Beneath the public ritual of turning to God, candidates wrestle with personal questions, asking themselves: Is God truly calling me? How can I be sure? Am I called to join this community? Which past behaviors have given me life and which were destructive? How can I let go and be open to God's love?
This book serves to improve the listening skills of guides and helps them ask the right questions at the right time. The appendix contains specific suggestions for interviews during the four stages of the catechumenate and offers a format for a discernment day before the Rite of Election.

Description:
Why is it that when Christians are asked to explain their faith they are often left speechless? True, there is much about faith that defies description and explanation. Yet John Pritchard thinks we can do better than stunned silence when posed with challenging questions about what it means to have faith in Jesus. In a world that increasingly doubts the need for organized religion, it is important for Christians to have straightforward and respectful answers to questions such as "Is Christianity for those who can't get a life?" and "What use is a dying God?" and "What's the use of praying?" In How to Explain Your Faith, Pritchard helps us explore these challenging questions and many more.
In a style that is simple without being simplistic or sugar-coated, practical without being preachy or pious, Pritchard takes readers to the heart of the matter of Christian faith.

Description:
From the opening hymn to the closing song, Anne Koester takes us on a journey through the Sunday Mass, offering meaningful insights to enhance our weekly gathering. Koester speaks as if she sits across the table from us, sharing her thoughts about our individual roles in the church and why they are so important. Inspired by real-life conversations on this topic, Sunday Mass: Our Role and Why it Matters encourages us to become a more active assembly so we may be further enriched by the liturgical celebration. To help us fully understand our mission and ministry as the Body of Christ, Koester includes some of her conversations as examples and offers relevant reflection material with room for us to note our personal thoughts and responses.
This thoughtful book presents new perspective on the eucharistic celebration in a way that teaches us to fully engage in the Mass each week, to enjoy that time spent with God and our fellow parishioners, and to share our faith with others as we "go to love and serve the Lord."

Description:
Becoming Catholic is a process of falling in love. The person we're falling in love with, over and over again, more and more deeply, is Jesus Christ. To become Catholic, you have to open your heart to the love Jesus has for you and return that love as best you can.
So begins The Heart of Faith, where catechumens and baptized candidates quickly learn that Jesus Christ will be their focus throughout their journey through the catechumenate. They will learn what they need to do to become Catholic too, of course, as they discern, pray, worship, break open the Word, and try to live their daily lives as followers of Christ.
They will learn in particular what living the way of Christ looks like.
The author says it involves these four things:
- A conversion of mind and heart
- An understanding of what the Church teaches
- A loving heart
- A true desire to be initiated (or received into full communion).
He guides catechumens and baptized candidates through the entire process of preparing for initiation or reception into full communion. Wagner covers the major rites (e.g. the Rite of Acceptance, the Rite of Election, the Scrutinies) as well as keeping Lent, celebrating the Triduum, and life after baptism.

Description:
How does the vision of Christian initiation outlined in The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults fit into a program modeled after the school year? It doesn't, argues Mary Birmingham. The RCIA describes an initiation process that exists at the heart of the Church's life and on the same schedule as the Church: every day, all year long. While that may sound overwhelming and unimaginable, Birmingham carefully explains how it is not only possible but also the best stewardship of the gifts and talents of initiation ministers. She then walks the reader step by step through the periods and rites of the RCIA, providing helpful insight along the way. Chapters cover topics such as: sacramental catechesis; the periods and rites of initiation; the initiating community; mystagogia; doctrine and the catechumenate.

Four key ways RCIA sponsors can make your job easier (webinar recording)
Join Diana Macalintal and Nick Wagner for this info-packed webinar where we delve into why the role of the RCIA sponsor is so important.
Many of us know what a sponsor does, but maybe there is more a sponsor could do. What if every sponsor had specific tasks for training their catechumens or candidates? What if that training focused on the areas of Christian worship, Catholic teaching, parish community life, and discipleship in the world? How would that change the RCIA conversion process in your parish?
This webinar originally aired on April 17, 2012. The full video/audio recording includes a downloadable handout and recommended resources.
Once you purchase your recording, you will receive a download link for a PDF with information on accessing your recording. Be sure to click the download link after your purchase so you can view your recording. You can view your recording any time as many times as you like.

Joint RCIA Formation: Catechizing the catechized and uncatechized together (webinar)
Date: May 23, 2012. Join Diana Macalintal and Nick Wagner for this webinar where we explore how to prepare a catechetical session that will meet the needs of the diverse people we meet in the RCIA.
Date:
Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 2:00p to 3:00p Eastern Daylight Time / 11:00a to 12:00p Pacific Daylight Time
Registration:
$15.00 for individual registration
$37.50 total for your whole parish team of three or more people
Description:
It’s the third Wednesday of the month, and that means it’s your turn to lead the catechumenate session. Your group includes, at one end of the spectrum, an unbaptized single mother who has trouble understanding “this whole three-persons-in-one-God” thing.
At the other end is a Baptist former seminarian who is preparing to marry a faithful Catholic woman. He has been at Sunday Mass—and often weekday Mass—every week for the last two years. He is also good friends with the pastor, and they frequently discuss articles from America magazine together.
And then there are several folks between those two extremes. How can you possibly prepare a catechetical session that will meet the needs of these diverse people?
That’s exactly the question we’ll tackle in Joint RCIA formation: Catechizing the catechized and uncatechized together—our next TeamRCIA webinar. Join Nick Wagner and Diana Macalintal for an in-depth look at these topics:
- Why it is crucial to distinguish between the catechized and uncatechized in faith formation
- What the RCIA means, exactly, by “catechized,” “uncatechized,” and how you can discern the difference
- A thorough overview of how to catechize both the catechized and the uncatechized—even if your team is small
- The “so what?”—a discussion about the benefits to your initiation process if you clarify your catechetical focus
Don’t miss this important team training event. Invite your colleagues and friends.
What you'll need for the Webinar:
All you need is a computer connected to the Internet and speakers or headphones to hear the presentation. That's it! You will be able to ask questions by typing them using your computer.
Optional: If you would like to speak to the presenter during the Webinar, you will need a microphone connected to your computer or you can call in to the telephone number which will be provided. Note: Registration fee does not include any long distance charges incurred if the participant chooses to use the telephone option during the Webinar.

Meeting the Challenge: Faith Formation with Baptized and Unbaptized Children in the Same Parish (PDF download)
Has this happened to you? One day you discover that a child in the religious education program is unbaptized. Now what do you do?
Your purchase allows you to use, reproduce, and distribute this download for free for each member of your initiation team.
Once you purchase, you'll receive a link to download the PDF file.
Description:
Working with children in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is challenging. We often encounter parents who want their unbaptized children to celebrate the sacraments of initiation with their peers. We have parish catechists who are unsure about their role in the catechumenate process. The catechetical leader or director of religious education often feels left out of the process. So what does a parish do?
Carolyn Stucke and Jane Pierron have written a helpful, practical e-booklet that will guide you through all of these questions and more. Their plain, common-sense solutions will help all the children’s ministers of the parish to be more confident in carrying out the church’s vision of initiation for children.

The secret to teaching adults in the RCIA (webinar recording)
Join Nick Wagner and Diana Macalintal for a one-hour online workshop to learn about the distinct learning needs and learning styles of adults.
Has this ever happened to you? It was your turn to lead the catechetical session for your initiation process. You gave a stellar presentation on the distinctions between sanctifying and actual grace. You used an animated PowerPoint; you provided a step-by-step handout. You even managed to inject a little humor.
Then, at the end of your 45 minutes, you asked if there are any questions. And…nothing. Crickets chirped quietly outside the classroom window.
Did they get it? Did they understand what you were telling them? Will it make any difference in their lives? How do you know? How do you know if you are having any impact at all on the faith lives of the catechumens?
When it comes to teaching adults, we have to switch gears. Adults have distinct learning needs and learning styles. In this 60-minute online workshop, Nick Wagner and Diana Macalintal will explore:
- Why using an adult-learning model is essential for catechumenate formation
- What adult learning looks like
- How to lead a catechetical session using adult learning methods
- What the impact of an adult learning process might be for your parish

Description:
Leisa Anslinger's first seven chapters offer essential principles that have evolved from discussions with pastoral leaders in a variety of ministerial settings, as well as careful study of sacred Scripture, theology, Church documents, and current research.
Section two pulls all the principles together by offering "seasonal renewal" focus points with examples of how the seasons can lead parishioners toward a living relationship with Christ—with Sunday Eucharist at the center.
The concluding section offers an "Appreciative Process for Planning and Development," to help pastoral leaders build on what is already contributing to positive, dynamic life within their parishes.
Turning Hearts to Christ is a dynamic and essential planning resource for pastors, parish leadership teams, pastoral staffs, pastoral council members, faith formation, evangelization, and stewardship committee members.

Description:
Christian initiation is a journey marked with the teachings, rituals, actions and songs of faith—a Hallelujah highway, one might say. The history of how the Church has initiated adults and children over the centuries is itself a journey from a vibrant process adapted in many ways according to local need, through a period of dormancy, and back to a vibrancy just beginning to be understood and appreciated. In this exciting book Paul Turner relates the history of the catechumenate through the stories of people and documents that played a significant role in developing the rites and recording its development from the earliest days of the Church to the present. Quotations from the documents, maps and photos of significant places and artifacts enrich and enliven the story.

Introducing Friends on the Way: Children’s Catechumenate Resource (webinar recording)
The webinar is over. But don't worry. We recorded it for you. You can watch it, free, here!
Description:
Janet Miller, author and designer of Friends on the Way, gives us a complete walk-through of this simple, concrete, comprehensive catechesis for child catechumens.
Friends on the Way is a simple, concrete, comprehensive catechesis for child catechumens. Janet Miller, has put together an amazing set of materials that you can put directly in the hands of your children's RCIA catechists.
Friends on the Way includes a dismissal session and a catechetical session for every Sunday of the liturgical year. In the course of the year, children learn about the entire mystery of faith. And each session includes a direct link to the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Also, you can use Friends on the Way to help the parents catechize their children—even if the parents' level of faith-knowledge is not very strong. Each session includes an optional intergenerational activity that will get the whole family interacting together plus a reproducible handout for families to take home, which helps them pray, share faith, and put that faith into action.
The best thing about Friends on the Way is that it is completely electronic. That means you download each session directly to your computer as a PDF file, and you keep that file on your computer as long as you want. Plus, you have our permission to forward that file and to print as many copies as you like for each of the catechists on your team.
Sneak preview of Friends on the Way
Janet is working on the sessions for Year A as we speak. Advent is finished and available now. Christmastide and Winter Ordinary Time are soon to follow. We wanted to let you know about this now so we can give you an advance look. Click here for a free sample (PDF, 478 kb) and take a look for yourself.
For more information on ordering Year A of Friends on the Way, go to this Web page. And if you are not directly involved in the children's catechumenate, please forward this information to someone who is. They're going to want to know!

Here's a 50-minute webinar of Janet leading an overview of the great features of Friends on the Way with lots of Q & A from the participants on children's catechumenate issues.
A simple, concrete, comprehensive catechesis for child catechumens
Friends on the Way is designed for your child catechumens. This isn't an adaptation of something originally designed for adult RCIA or Catholic sacramental preparation. It has been written, from the ground up, for unbaptized catechumens.
Friends on the Way is comprehensive. The program includes a dismissal session and a catechetical session for every Sunday of the liturgical year. In the course of the year, children learn about the entire mystery of faith.
Friends on the Way is flexible. Each unit is designed so that you can proceed to the catechetical session immediately after the dismissal session on Sunday. Or you can facilitate the catechetical session sometime later in the week.
Friends on the Way is intergenerational. We all know that older, unbaptized children often have parents who might need a good deal of formation themselves. Every session of Friends on the Way includes an optional intergenerational activity to help the parents help their children grow in faith plus a take-home handout for families to use at home to help them pray, share faith, and live that faith in their household.
Friends on the Way is engaging. Author and designer Janet Miller has been teaching children for 45 years. She serves in the children's initiation ministry in her parish. And she has 10 grandchildren! She knows how to keep a child's interest.
Friends on the Way is easy to use. The sessions are clearly outlined and includes illustrations when necessary. You can put this in the hands of your children's RCIA catechists and have confidence they will succeed.
Friends on the Way is scriptural and liturgical. Every dismissal and catechetical session flows from the Sunday readings of the liturgical year.
Friends on the Way is linked to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Every catechetical session includes a direct reference to the Catechism.
Friends on the Way is economical. Because it is sold as an e-resource, production costs are low. Sessions are sent to you as download links. You have them on your computer and may use them as needed year after year. You only pay for them once. And your purchase entitles you to make as many copies as you need for use within your own parish.
I checked out the resource, and I love it! This is an answer to prayer.

Description:
Every RCIA ritual has a "secret sauce." You can find it in the pastoral introduction to each individual rite. The introduction to the Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens, for example, provides a clear theology of the rite along with specific instructions for its celebration. The introduction describes the central symbols of the ritual and the roles of the various ministers. It also provides an overview of possible adaptations the rite allows for.
Yet, as helpful as this introduction is, many RCIA team members have never read it. Nick Wagner has written a 17-page reader's guide, in plain English, including discussion questions, to help you provide simple and effective training for your team. After going through this reader's guide together, your team will have a solid understanding of the theology of the rite and a clearer vision for celebrating it.

Team Training Videos
Seven videos now available from the 2011 Video Marathon. Use them to help train your team.
This past summer, Nick Wagner and Diana Macalintal hosted a video marathon—seven topics in seven days. We got lots of wonderful feedback, like this note:
Thank you for these videos. They provided clear and concise explanations on topics most on our minds, and I especially benefited from the practical ideas that I can implement right now. The one on sponsors was great. Hope to see more of these videos!
—Laurita Miller, Big Pine Key, Florida
We’ve also heard from a number of you that you’d like to be able to use the videos for future team training. So all seven are now available in the online bookstore. You can purchase single topics or get the entire set of seven at a discount.
Once you purchase, you'll receive a PDF file with information on the private website and password to view your videos online. Share it with your team members, and watch the videos any time you like as many times as you like.

The Dancing Word: Woman at the Well (DVD)
Betsey Beckman, renowned liturgical dancer and presenter, and J. Michael Sparough, SJ, retreat master, storyteller and author invite us into author John Shea’s beloved re-telling of the Woman at the Well for an emotion-filled journey of thirst, heart-break, humor and healing.
Description:
With natural settings weaving together Biblical and 21st-century images, the liberating message of the Gospel comes to life with refreshing water for our times. As the story begins, we meet a Samaritan woman heavily burdened and hardened by the wounds of life. In the heat of the day, she approaches the village well and encounters a strange Jewish man. She braces herself, fearing the worst. However, this unknown guest proceeds to break all the cultural codes that would keep both men and women, as well as Samaritans and Jews, worlds apart … he respectfully asks the woman for a drink. With the perfect balance of boldness and gentleness, humor and healing, Jesus gradually peels back layers of deceit and self-defense to reveal the woman’s true need. Soon it is Jesus who is offering spiritual water to a heart broken-open. Now giddy with joy, the woman returns to her village, bubbling over with Jesus’ life-giving water for all!
This DVD will help RCIA teams enhance the elect and catechumen's journey. It’s also perfect for lenten reflections and women’s retreats! Also included is a free PDF download of reflection questions.
