Simbang Gabi: How to put stars in the eyes of your seekers this Advent

  1. I was introduced to “roraten Masses” on Advent weekdays in Germany, a lovely custom. They began by candlelight, before sunrise. So interesting to learn of Filipino traditions of the Missa Aurea, Misa de Gallo, and the Simbang Gabi in Advent! The delicate interplay between creation (light and darkness), work rhythms, and faith, is beautiful. We wait for the light! Yet the flicker of light we see in early winter mornings is more likely to be the glow of a cell phone. I want to see more stars in our eyes at Advent! Thanks for this post, Diana.

What a wonderful connection, Rita, to other Advent customs around the world! It also makes me wonder how these images of flickers of light in the darkness play out in the Southern hemisphere where daylight is coming to its peak and the darkness will begin to deepen. Nonetheless, the Advent is a great reminder of how important time and the cosmos are in our liturgical symbols. Thanks for adding to the conversation!
